Bloedel Reserve: Thoughtful by Nature

Sunlight filters through tall evergreens onto a shaded forest path at Bloedel Reserve, where a wooden bench overlooks a still pond surrounded by ferns and lush greenery.

Some places make you slow down the moment you arrive. Bloedel Reserve, tucked away on Bainbridge Island just outside of Seattle, is one of them. A 140-acre garden and forest preserve, the property was originally the private estate of Virginia and Prentice Bloedel, who envisioned the landscape as a place for reflection, restoration, and connection with nature. Today, it’s recognized for its intentional design that blends sustainability, ecology, and tranquility.

As a former Seattleite, I’m always reminded of how much I value the combination of natural beauty and purposeful planning this region offers. During a January visit, I was once again struck by how calm and immersive the entire property felt. Even in winter, everything was alive - moss-covered paths, layered greens, and views that revealed themselves slowly and quietly as I walked.

Bloedel Reserve isn’t a resort or a traditional venue, and that’s exactly what makes it compelling. Private events are limited and thoughtfully managed, with the Residence, Reflecting Pool, Japanese Guest House, and Lawn available for select gatherings. With views of the water and surrounding gardens, it’s an unexpected and unforgettable setting for a retreat, celebration, or wedding.

From a planning perspective, Bainbridge Island is surprisingly convenient. It feels remote yet is only a short ferry ride from downtown Seattle. For clients ready to step outside the usual event format, this location can be a meaningful and memorable choice.

At AWE, we create experiences that are rooted in both purpose and place. For those drawn to the Pacific Northwest, Bloedel Reserve can serve as the centerpiece of a larger program. We might pair it with a welcome dinner in the city, private ferry transportation, and a chef-led meal after a day spent exploring the Reserve. When the environment is this inspiring, the rest of the experience can be beautifully simple.

If you're planning a gathering with intention and want to give your guests space to connect and feel present, we’d be honored to help you bring it to life here!

At AWE Production, we’re always looking for destinations that spark something special — the kind of properties that don’t just host an event, but elevate it into a meaningful, unforgettable experience.

Last summer, we had the chance to plan our own team retreat at Destination Kohler in Wisconsin, and honestly? We fell in love! This gorgeous property is all about craftsmanship, comfort, and connection, wrapped up in a setting that feels both luxurious and grounded. Whether you’re planning a corporate retreat, a destination wedding, or a weekend getaway with a group, we think Kohler deserves a spot at the top of your list.

The American Club Hotel in Kohler, Wisconsin

Why We Loved It (and Why You Will, Too)

The meeting and event spaces are thoughtfully designed
We spent a full day tucked into their beautiful conference facilities, and we were impressed; not just by the polished look, but by the ease of our experience. Whether you’re running a high-level strategy session or breaking into small creative groups, the spaces flex beautifully to fit your needs.

The food? Absolutely worth the trip
We sampled all the signature restaurants (yes, we took our “research” very seriously) and were blown away by the quality and range. Fine dining, cozy casual, indulgent sweets — Kohler has it all. For groups, the ability to offer standout culinary moments across multiple venues is a dream. And the Kohler Chocolates? We’ll just say… they make a pretty unforgettable welcome gift.

There’s time and space to recharge
After long workdays, we visited their iconic golf courses, relaxed at their five-star spa, explored the woods, and even did a little shopping. Kohler offers that perfect balance of activity and calm, so your guests can tailor the experience to whatever they’re craving: a little fresh air, a little luxury, or a little of both.

It’s steeped in design and craft
As event designers, we couldn’t help but swoon over the Kohler Design Center, where the brand’s heritage of innovation and style shines through. For groups or couples looking for a destination with personality and depth, this is a rare (and very cool) bonus.

It feels like a true escape
Even though we weren’t that far from home, Kohler made us feel transported. There’s a sense of ease and quiet luxury here; the feeling that you’ve stepped into a world where everything has been carefully curated, and you can just settle in, connect, and enjoy.

What makes Kohler so special is its ability to blend sophistication with warmth. Whether you’re gathering a team for focused work sessions or bringing loved ones together for a wedding weekend, this is a place that sets the stage for meaningful connection. Every little detail, from the turndown service to the signature Sidecar cocktails in the afternoon, carries that signature touch of thoughtful design and hospitality.

For us, the best destinations are the ones that leave you both refreshed and inspired. And Kohler? We can’t wait to go back!

Shinola Hotel

Continuing our series on event destination properties, this month we feature a hometown favorite – the Shinola Hotel. Beyond luxury watches and leather goods, this iconic brand knows how to do hospitality! From out of town guests to locals, corporate groups to wedding parties, everyone loves this uniquely Detroit property. Warm and welcoming, hip yet comfortable, the hotel is a quietly luxurious retreat right in the heart of the city. Since the hotel opened in 2019, we’ve had the pleasure of producing a number of events here as well as coordinating VIP groups visiting the area.

The main Shinola clock on Woodward Avenue at the Shinola Hotel in Detroit, Michigan.

Blending new and old, the property is a perfect example of adaptive reuse. The original 1915 Rayl’s hardware store along with the 1936 Singer Sewing Machine building were renovated and connected with carefully-designed new construction. The result is an exterior that preserves the character of the neighborhood with a fascinating maze of corridors and unexpected surprises inside.

Our guests staying on property have thoroughly enjoyed their visits. With 129 rooms, the hotel can accommodate larger groups, but still maintains a boutique, residential feel. Rooms and suites are luxurious and modern with thoughtful touches throughout.

In terms of events, we’re always happy when our clients choose to host their social or corporate gatherings here. The Birdy Room is lovely, with its conservatory feel and outdoor terrace. Bixby Hall also has fantastic natural light and can accommodate larger seated dinners. There’s an adjacent, fully-outfitted boardroom as well as two foyers for gracious arrivals and departures. Located in a separate building, the event center offers a private entrance and a dedicated valet location away from that of the main hotel.

Food and bar service is always excellent. We love the care put into their menu offerings, as well as the opportunity to incorporate items from their outstanding on-site restaurants (which can also be rented out for events.) Wines and spirits are well-chosen, relevant, and expertly presented. Service staff are consistently friendly and efficient. You are in good hands when you host your event here.

Overall, we’re big fans of properties with five star service in a relaxed, luxe setting. While we adore traveling and experiencing new surroundings, sometimes, there’s no place like home! ❤️

Magical Ireland

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, we are kicking off a monthly series on favorite event destinations with a visit to Ireland’s majestic Dromoland Castle. For anyone planning an exclusive celebration (or just looking for a luxurious getaway), this property is a must-see!

Exterior of Dromoland Castle in Ireland

Stepping onto the estate feels like taking a journey back in time. Once home to the O'Brien family, direct descendants of the legendary High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, these grounds have witnessed over 1,000 years of history. Lovingly restored and beautifully decorated, Dromoland Castle thoughtfully blends historic charm with modern five-star service and amenities.

The property is located 150 miles from Dublin Airport and only eight miles from Shannon Airport, both of which have U.S. Customs and Border Protection Preclearance. Situated in the heart of County Clare, the castle is within easy driving distance of Wild Atlantic Way highlights like the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren as well as the nearby cities of Galway and Limerick.

From the moment you arrive at Dromoland Castle, the attentive staff ensures every detail of your stay is seamlessly managed. Whether enjoying an amazing meal at the flagship Earl of Thomond restaurant or unwinding in the serene spa, their exceptional service guarantees a warm welcome and gracious hospitality. With 97 elegantly appointed rooms and suites, the castle provides an opulent, yet cozy, retreat and a perfect setting for destination events.

The grounds are, in a word, magical! Spread across 500 lush acres, there is something for everyone - ancient woodlands, secluded walking trails, manicured gardens, a tranquil lake, and of course, a spectacular golf course. Activities abound – from falconry, archery, and horseback riding to historical tours, yoga, tennis, and more. Itineraries can be customized, providing destination event guests with a perfectly tailored experience.

When it comes to event spaces, Dromoland Castle has many options. The grand Brian Boru Hall, with its high ceilings and crystal chandeliers, is perfect for large wedding receptions and gala dinners. For something more intimate, the Terrace and Drawing Rooms each offer their own stunning setting within the main castle. In addition, the extensive grounds provide a number of gorgeous outdoor locations for wedding ceremonies and cocktail receptions. For corporate groups, the castle also offers top-notch conference facilities, making it a great choice for executive retreats and meetings.
